The outcome of the war in Ukraine will depend on the results of the US presidential election in 2024. This opinion was expressed by former French President Francois Hollande.

“If [Donald] Trump is elected, he will say, ‘We stop here.’ The Russians will be able to keep everything they have. The war is very costly,” he noted in an interview published on Friday by the British newspaper Financial Times.

In addition, Hollande, who served as the head of state from 2012 to 2017, emphasized that over the past six years, the shape of a new geopolitical order has become clearer, partly due to the formation of an alliance between Russia and China, which challenge the West.

Hollande also criticized the current French president, Emmanuel Macron, who, during his visit to China earlier this year, focused exclusively on economic matters. “If you go to China with only economic interests in mind and forget about French political interests, you will be heard less, and you will appear weaker,” he added.

At the same time, Hollande, like Macron, put forward the idea of reducing the EU’s dependence on the United States in ensuring the security of Europe. According to him, European countries need to move towards “strategic autonomy” and the development of collective defense. The former president pointed out that such autonomy does not necessarily have to be tied to NATO.
