French President Emmanuel Macron has reached out to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, requesting an invitation to the upcoming BRICS summit. The event is set to take place in Johannesburg.
According to L’Opinion, Macron has already sent a request to his South African counterpart.
«Based on the information we have, the head of the French state has asked his South African colleague Cyril Ramaphosa, who will be hosting the next autumn meeting, to invite him», the publication states.
However, Ramaphosa has not yet made a decision on this matter.
The BRICS summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is scheduled for August.
South Africa is also facing a challenge related to organizing the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the summit, to avoid possible arrest at the request of the International Criminal Court. Various options have been considered, including holding a video conference, granting diplomatic immunity, or relocating the summit to China.
