Former President Donald Trump and his aide Walt Nauta are charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to a released federal indictment.
Former US President Donald Trump has been charged with 37 counts, including possession of classified documents related to national security.
“The purpose of the conspiracy was to have Trump keep secret documents he took with him from the White House and hide them from a federal grand jury,” the indictment says.
The charges brought include punishment of up to 20 years in prison under the most “heavy” of the articles.
Last week, Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted him on those counts. In August, the FBI seized 102 classified documents from Trump. After arriving at the court, Trump was taken under arrest, which, however, is of a formal nature.
On the way to and near the courthouse, Trump was met by crowds of his supporters. They stood on the sides of the road along which the car with the ex-president was driving, with banners and huge flags that read “Trump 2024”, hinting at his return to the White House.
Outside the courthouse where the Trump trial is currently underway, activists have turned out to be a veritable rally, shouting slogans like “We want Trump back!” or “Miami for Trump!”
Getting out of the car, the ex-president greeted his supporters.
Trump and his aide did not receive a preventive measure in court. They were recognized as not inclined to escape.
In the following months, prosecutors and the defense of the ex-president of the United States will participate in pre-trial procedures: the prosecution will present its evidence, the defense will try to drop charges before the hearings begin.
